There are lengthy discussions on aesthetics, for example, as Des Esseintes nauby on the right colours for each of his rooms. I found it the most tedious part of the book, and so was surprised to find similar inventories the model for Wilde’s in Against Nature far more riveting and more numerous, with a different subject for almost every chapter. Huysmans decided to keep certain features of the Naturalist style, such as its use of minutely documented realistic nauby, but apply them instead to a portrait of an exceptional individual: And yet, the book’s style does manage to draw you into this character’s interiority, precisely through this exhaustiveness that borders on tedium.
Travel, indeed, struck him as being a waste of time since he believed that the imagination could provide a more-than-adequate substitute for the vulgar reality of actual experience. In a famous episode, Des Esseintes encrusts a tortoise with jewels. But, being something of a page-turner lover, and despite the utter brilliance and engrossing nature of the writer, I can’t be any more generous. But don’t expect your pulse to quicken or to be dragged along through a galloping tale, this is a book for those possessing a wry, dry, sardonic sense of humor and those who find interest in how well-off aesthetes used to live, what they thought about and spent their time doing.
