The Long Goodbye (novel) – Wikipedia
In fact, all the Wade chapters reminded me of Lowry, and that is a big compliment. He is attracted to women but not a philanderer or even much of a flirt.
Pacing seems to be a crucial element of lafgo mystery, and as a reader new to this particular sub-genre of mystery, I think I stopped and started and reversed and stalled too much to ride whatever momentum Chandler had intended for me. This, I hear, is one of his best.
The Long Goodbye
It is considered by many critics to be the best Raymond Chandler novel, a classic of literature in general. Not my cup of tea!
View all 3 comments. Dove lavora questo Marlowe? Because man, the world that Chandler paints in The Long Goodbye is certainly not the most pleasant or optimistic one you’ll ever come across; a world rakmond of spoiled, weak little hairless apes, running around flinging their own excrement at each other and succumbing to their basest vices at the slightest provocation.
Philip Marlowe 1 – 10 of 11 books. Too much light for a noir; Marlow feels out of place, as does Chandler. Chandler wrote this novel while his wife was dying. How they played the aggressive role, not every time for sure but quite often.
There’s something about seeing Marlowe, and his detective friends, pursue and desire truth that gives me strength and some kind of faith and yes, a little courage.
It will not happen to me. Wade drinks himself into a stupor, so Marlowe takes a walk outside. There were too many cliches and it read like a bad Lifetime murder mystery. However they of course changed so much that it didn’t detract from the book. Refresh and try again.
The pacing and prose picks up while becoming overly complex, as usual for Chandler. His wife was terminally ill and he was suffering from bouts of depression and alcohol abuse. This book is not yet featured on Adioa. So I downloaded it from Amazon and cjandler to read it. Marlowe’s friend soon turns up dead, an apparent suicide. The plot is a bit meandering, Philip Marlow seems to have outlived his time, and the tough-guy 30s sensibility doesn’t play too well in a Los Angeles in which the cops gripe about how inage the ads are on television.

Raymond Chandler’s Long Goodbye. Marlowe is drawn into a sordid crowd of adulterers and alcoholics in LA’s Idle Valley, where the rich are suffering one big suntanned hangover.
I don’t know too much about Chandler’s life and background, but my hunch alrgo reading this was he put a lot of his personal philosophy into this book. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. He seems to like them anyway. Only a fool would have thought otherwise. Organized crime is just the dirty side of the sharp dollar.
I went and looked for his books and, in particular this one, because I wanted to read one of the early masters of the genre. For those who don’t know, as mentioned The Long Goodbye concerns a recurring character of Chandler’s named Philip Marlowe, a private investigator from whom we now derive many of our stereotypes concerning the subject — the shabby candler office with the frosted-glass window, the sudden appearance of dangerous dames with gams that just won’t quit, the tough-as-nails sad-sack private dick who don’t take chadler guff from nobody no how.
You chandper even like it if you haven’t read his other book, but if you are a Chandler fan, particularly if you’ve read The Big Sleep, you’ll find this a disappointment. Two characters in the novel are based on Chandler himself; both of them highlight Chandler’s awareness of his own flaws—his alcoholism and his doubts about the value of his writing.

Once there, Marlowe grills her on the death of Terry Lennox’s wife. Let the lawyers work it out. Out there in the night of a thousand crimes, people were dying, being maimed, cut by flying glass, crushed against steering wheels or under heavy tires. An alcoholic, a real alcoholic, is not the same man at all. But despite the unstudied language and the earthy emotional and visual overloads, the pure clean raimlnd of man to man’s “ess This knocked my aios off. Ugh, see how easy it is to fall into cheesy Chandleresque mannerisms?
